The only musical ever to have an entire cast and band only made up of teenagers is 13 the Musical. Had it not closed so fast, I am pretty sure I would have gone to see it. This show is about a 12 year old who is getting ready for his Bar Mitzvah and his parents are getting divorced. Which means he is moving out of his perfect life in the city to move to Appleton, Indiana. That’s the basic synopsis, so if you are interested in know more about it google it. Sadly this show closed on January 4th, 2009, only opening a few months before.

Many people in high school are concerned about the one event that brings everyone together: Prom. Disney came out with a new movie describing and depicting just that. Yes, Prom is a movie I went to see with my best friend and we went into the theater knowing it was going to be a bit disappointing in the sense that some of it was going to be over the top fake due to Disney’s “family” appropriateness (it was better than we expected), but we went to see it for the love story. It’s about a prom perfectionist, a rebel, the prom committee, the guy who can’t get a date, the couple that lasts for all of 5 minutes until someone is cheated on, and the dorks that are best friends who slowly drift apart because the one guy likes the girl that is the “cheatee”. It’s very confusing in writing, but a LOT better on screen. It is worth the $10 to go see.

What do you get when you have a sweet and kind foreign exchange student living with a perverted nerd, your best friend has been in high school for seven years and slurps Jello through his nose, your beautiful girlfriend dumps you for the heartless jerk who is captain of the ski team, your mom is the strangest bird on the block, two Japanese kids car race and learned how to speak english only from ESPN and NASCAR, and the paper boy is like a possessed kid from a horror movie? Well, that’s Lane Meyer’s life in Better Off Dead. Lane Meyer is an average joe and can barely be noticed on the planet. His girlfriend dumped him and a paper boy is constantly asking for the money he owes (“I.. WANT.. MY.. TWO DOLLARS!!!”), but the foreign exchange student speaks a word to no one, and this makes Lane very curious. All throughout this movie Lane is sick of the twists and turns of life, so he makes multiple attempts on multiple occasions to try and kill himself. All of these attempts, obviously, fail miserably and only lead Lane down a further twisted path. Will he get the foreign exchange student who only speaks to him? Or will he get the girl that dumped him back? It’s your job to find out!

In 2003, I was a big Amanda Bynes fan. I loved all of the acting she did (All That, The Amanda Show, etc.). She has starred in many of my top favorite teen films, including “What A Girl Wants.” This movie is absolutely adorable and I love it just because it has the perfect mixture of comedy, seriousness, and “revenge.” It really shows the struggles of a teen when she wants to find out who her dad is when her mom is a wedding singer and she goes along and works as a waitress to earn money for her and her mom. As in most teen movies, she is very close with her mom, and she begs her mom to let her venture off to Britain to find her father and understand why he hasn’t been there for her for most of her life, because she feels she isn’t good enough if he doesn’t come and find her. This is Amanda Bynes at her peak in acting so far, she does an excellent job of playing such characters.

“A missile’s in my house Gary, a missile! My parents… Chet… THEY’RE GONNA FREAK OUT!” Another one of the best teenage movies I have seen that really shows the struggle of male freshmen in high school is “Weird Science.” Two best friends decide to make a girl in lieu of facing rejection; they soon gain popularity, have a huge party, and face the challenge of a,lifetime. This is a sci-fi movie that is really meant to help all of the “rejected” high school males feel better and give everyone in the room a laugh.

As you can guess, the next movie I am blogging about is “Sixteen Candles.” This is another one of my personal favorites. Recently, AMC movie theaters played it on the big screen for all of those fans who miss it, or weren’t around for it. It was so nice to be able to see it on the big screen (it’s one of my personal dreams! Now it’s achieved!) This is about a girl, who’s birthday becomes wrapped up and forgotten in the midst of her older sister’s wedding, which is a day later. Soon Sam starts falling for a guy, Jake Ryan, her grandparents show up with a foreign exchange student from China, her siblings and parents are going bezerk, and she has a Freshman stalker (the king of all dorks). This movie has so many unexpected twists and turns, kind of like a teenager in the Odyssey, that I commend John Hughes for putting in there to keep you fully entertained at all times.

“There’s another week right there, Bender. Any questions?” I am going to start with one of my personal 80s favorites: The Breakfast Club. This is perhaps the best teen film ever known to mankind (at least in my opinion, anyways). It makes you laugh, cry, think, and everything in between; it is full of the typical 80s slang and offensive phrases. I love every time that Bender talks, he either says something stupid and wrong, or something to the effect of “eat my shorts.” Claire is just insecure and is finding out that popularity isn’t everything. Allison is trying to get some attention and realize she can’t just spill out her life story in one bag. Andrew is learning to deal with the pressure his father’s demanding and oppressing personality. Brian is just trying to fit in and make his way through high school without dying of stress from his mom. This movie is really about dealing with your problems and finding your niche in the world.
Here’s the trailer, it will bring back memories:
